I want to replace carpet with prefinished 3/4 X 2-1/4″ red oak hardwood in my 18 year-old house. Is 30 lb. felt (tar paper) still one of the best underlayments to use and does a 6″ overlap cause a problem with regard to board height alignment? Also, I don’t understand how a 2″ staple (entering at an angle) is going to reach the floor joist, as recommended in the literature, when there are two layers of subflooring (5/8 ” plywood topped with 3/4″ pressboard), is that a problem?
