quick drying clear floor finish for stairs ?
I bought a house and moved in about 5 months ago. In retrospect I probably should have taken care of this before I moved in, but like so many things “it seemed like the thing to do at the time”. Anyway, I have 2 sets of southern yellow pine stairs that weren’t well finished, i.e. there wasn’t enough finish put on them to start with, they weren’t well sanded, top that off with years of benign neglect and I have a problem.
I’m getting the stairs to clean up reasonably well, so that’s Ok. What I’m looking for is a quick drying finish (1-2 hours) so we (me, the wife & the cat) don’t have to move out for a day or so while the finish drys. So far, the best thing I’ve found is minwax’s floor reviver which drys in 1-2 hours, but it also says “Provides care, beauty and protection for your hardwood floors for 3-6 months” and I’m looking/hoping for a semi-permanent solution.
I won’t be startled if the answer is to bite the bullet and move out for a day or so while the finish drys, just hoping that there’s another answer.

I have used Fabulon Crystal-a waterborne floor finish with good success on several floors and only one set of stairs I have done.
You'll have to do the studying up to know if compatible with the old finish (if not removed).
It's not a quick drying finish, but Waterlox makes some amazing all in one finishes that will last you years once its done properly.
