Saw an installation done by Quitting Time HVAC, Inc. Condo built in 87. Center unit of 3. First floor has living rooom from to back. Left side kitchen and dinning room. Right side two bedrooms.
Lower level family room from to back. Left side study and bar area and some utility space.
Right side bedroom and large untility space with furnace and WH.
The cold air return run next parallel to the leght of the house and I think picked up some returns in the two upstair bedrooms. Then two bays where panned out to run it to the inside walls. one bay terminated about 6″ inches from the wall, the other bay terminated about 3ft from the wall, where the last section of the sheet metal ran out.
Looking up you could see the cold air return from the living room above through the slots cut in the rough floor.
And below this was the wall separating the furnace room from the family room. Only DW on the family room side. But it had a set of high and low cold air return vents.
Also water pipes for the upstair bath ran through one of the bays. The y just panned over top of the pipes leaving a big gap where it went over the pipes.
And lastly there was a small register cut into the cold air return on the side of the furnace.
