I need to replace the missing wood quoins that once graced the front of our Italainate home…but:
- The existing siding is 1X6 tongue and groove on top of 1X6 sheathing.
- At the corners, neither the sheathing nor the siding is cut flush, creating a zig-zag pattern, and faily large gaps at the corners (You can see the corner studs in some instances).
- The quoin size will be 8″X12″ and 8″X18″
My questions:
- What should I do about these “gaps” at the corners? Should I fill them in?
- What type of flashing should I use, if any? One suggestion was a double layer of bituthane…What would you recommend?
- Should I “preconstruct” the quoins on the ground, or (given that the corners might not be that square) do it in place?
- While old growth redwood would be nice, it is too difficult to find/expensive to use. I had though about Azek since it would be painted any way…thoughts?
Thanks a million…
