Radiata pine for painted exterior use
I need to buy a couple of pieces of trim for our Victorian house, trying to come close to matching the 7/8″ thickness of existing trim. The local lumberyard offers redwood and cedar in 5/8″ true thickness and radiata (aka Monterey) pine in 3/4″ thickness. Trim will be painted (and I can backprime, endprime, etc.), but is on the South side of house, which is also the weather side here. Anyone have any experience with radiata pine’s durability? Online research seems to indicate that it’s poor.

Pine is a poor trim choice. however even poor woods can be acceptable if enough paint is applied properly and on a regular basis..
The question is, how much work do you want to do in the future? (unless you plan on flipping this place)
