HI guys, new here but an old hack with stuff around the house. Getting ready to put my house on the market but need to build a staircase railing. I have a pretty good idea of how I want to go about doing it but I don’t know how tall to make it. Must be some sort of code to meet and the house will be on the market soon so I want to do it right the first time. Thanks in advance for your ideas. BTW I’m in CT if that matters.

It used to be 36" Min on all level rail and 34"min plumb up from the front edge of any given tread to the top of the rail.
I would always use 36" to the Bottom of level rail and 34 1/2 to the top of rake rail. It's been a while since I've worked in NY/CT area.
I would just call the local code official and ask.
I think it depends on your local building code.
Most codes, at least BOCA and IRC, say 34" to 38" from the leading edge of the nosing to the top of the railing. To me lower is more comfortable, so I usually shoot for 34 1/2" to give myself a bit of leeway.
36" on level rail min., 34" on rake rail min in my area of upstate new york. By the way I'm only edging you out with nine and a half fingers.
