I have to replace the rake boards on my house – a 1920s Craftmen. The soffit extends from the house (on both sides) about 12″. The current rake boards are beyond repair. I plan to replace the old boards with new wood boards. I see a number of companies (like P5 or Windsor One) offer boards that are either pressure treated or treated and primed.
My question: do I need to be concerned with the weight of the boards if I go with pressure treated wood like those mentioned above? Not sure if this is something I need to be concerned about but thought I’d ask. I don’t like PVC so I am using real wood.
Thanks, Joe, Boston MA

no you dont need to be concerned with the weight difference. there may one with dimensional lumber but once dry, its all the same.
no you dont need to be......
Thanks for the advice. I can't wait to tackle this project in the early summer!

why not do it now and shovel the roof while you're up there.

That is an excellent idea but he should shovel first and build up the snow pile so that he can stand on it to reach the rakes. That way he won't have to keep moving the ladder and the job will go a lot quicker. Even in retirement you are always thinking and coming up with great ideas!!!!
I gather that folks out East wouldn't have to shovel very much to do that.

I'm in Massachusetts and we are getting blasted with snow. It's been very cold so the snow is very light and fluffy so you do have to tamp it down a bit before you stand on it. I figured this would be a good time to paint the side of my house......stand on snow bank and not have to keep moving the ladder. But I kept sinking in and left vertical brush marks on the house. That would not ordinarily be a problem but we're changing the color. The snow on the roof was a little firmer due to a little sunshine last week but I did not shovel enough and had those soft spots beside the house.
PVCs?
Have you considered using Versatex or Azek or similar PVC products? They're a once and done thing. Gutters will have to be hung off the roof deck I think though.
I'm with you on cellular PVC as a prime choice of material for consideration John. I always use subfascia and sub rake framing when I use PVC though. However, the OP says doesn't like it...and I doubt he has gutters on his rakes.
