I am building a house and would like a custom range hood with some tile and wood moulding and maybe plaster. But I don’t even know who to work with to build it. What kind of craftsman should I be looking for? It seems like quite an “art project” and I really want to make sure it comes out well. Any ideas? Thanks.

What part of the country are you in?
Contact a cabinet maker..... someone who builds actual cabinets from scratch....not someone who just installs prefabbed stuff. A cabinet maker should have no trouble at all doing the work you need done.

MC, I referred you to a cabinet maker because I got the impression that the range would be wood with tile inlays and mouldings...but then I re-read your post and you mention plaster...so this range hood may be integral to actual wall framework? Perhaps a Santa Fe type design or something?
I still say talk to a cabinet maker...but also a good, if not better choice is to consult with a residential design architect or a kitchen design architect. They may be able to help you "firm up " your initial ideas into an actual working drawing and they should be able to give you the names and phone numbers of reliable trades people capable of doing this job.
Good Luck.

Your choice but I would never pay an architect to design a range hood! Look at pics in magazines and have a cabinet maker build it. If you use raw wood it can be ceramic tiled, plastered or whatever. Several mfrs. sell inserts with flat bottoms that install in a hand-made enclosure.
