The other day I posted in the Lowe’s Still Rocks thread 72588.8 about paying $23.52 for 1/2″ ceiling rock at the regular yard.
It’s all hung as of yesterday…
Guess where the same ceiling rock is only $14 and small change!
Right there at the contractors checkout at LOWE’S, stacked up for the world to see.
They just started carrying it because management submitted requests from contractors.

I am a Lowes shopper. We do a number of different jobs and most of our customers shop there and that is where they make their selections. Also our one local yard caters to new builders only. But frankly I think they are the only way we will shop in five to ten years from now. Not because they do everything great they just do enough better at better prices and this is a price based economy. And if we don't keep our costs in line we will soon fail. DanT
And, by extension, that's why hardworking contractors can't compete with south of the border crews that will always be able to underbid regardless of how you cut costs. If you have a good traditional lumber yard in your area that gives good service, has knowledgeable people in the store and reasonable prices then make an effort to patronize that store or all you will be left with is Lowes, Walmart and Home Depot. Same goes for homeowners, if they would look at the craftsmanship in addition to just the price they would likely get a better product and more legitimate contractors would have a much healthier business. Just RANT RANT RANT!
11.79 for a 4x12 1/2 around here for the Drywall.Iam sure the price will rise once they go& refill the tank on the Truck!
I was at Lowes yesterday, and they had 7/16" OSB for $9.99. That's the cheapest it's been in a few months. Gas just spiked to $2.95/gallon. I have no idea how they determine the price of commodities. If you have any poo, fling it now.
"Gas just spiked to $2.95/gallon."Be thankful! Our gas is about $3.75 +/- a dime when converted to your dollar and this summer is expected by some to hit as high as $5.00 ($1.50 Canadian / liter).
Ok, I give, what is "ceiling rock"?

You can never make something foolproof because fools are so ingenious.
1/2" fiber reinforced drywall.
Today I stopped by the lumberyard just in time to catch the manager about to leave for Home Depot to buy some drywall.
"They sell it for one cent less than I can buy it."

Another day, another tool.
I have no idea of the size of your job(s) however personally I can't even consider buying drywall at home centers because, at least around here, they don't do inside delivery. Seeing it sitting in the store with an attractive price tag on it means nothing to me when I need to see 115 sheets upstairs and 100 sheets downstairs onsite at my project.
I was gonna say.... got boom truck?
Most home centers will deliver the rock you need, and those guys named Emilio and Esteban you meet out in the parking lot looking for work will be glad to meet the truck at your site and load it into the house for you. A little cash is needed, not too much.
Gene, you're not seriously telling us that Davis Housewrights employs casual labor (and likely illegal immigrants), not covered by worker's comp, on their customers' premises??
David, I am in a small upstate village, with the nearest bigbox a mountain-roads hour away.
And there is never any casual labor hanging out in the lot. The northern Adirondacks are undiscovered country for our Spanish-speaking friends.
But we are visiting our daughter and her husband this weekend in Evanston, IL. Chicagoland has a larger hispanic population than that of Los Angeles, and lining up a local rock delivery and carry-up in the parking lot of a Depot or Lowe's would be no problem, here.
Just teasing ya', and I figured as much. There is zero casual labor available around here. If you want a unit of plywood on the roof, the carpenters carry it up there. I don't expect that to change much, since the cost of living is too high and the entry level housing is too costly.
In the Bay Area I could find casual labor anywhere. My favorite source was Contractor's Labor Pool, since they kept it completely legit, but there were any number of sources for cash labor too.
You have to look very hard for cheap help here in Fairfield County CT....and you better be able to speak a language other than English if you expect them to accomplish anything.Jake Gulick
