I’m repainting my kids trikes and ran into a problem. I’m painting one purple, the other yellow and black. I had THOUGHT I had gotten to the final step – applying clear – when I applied it the previous coats of all colors CRINCLED! GAAA!
I waited overnight before applying the clear – do I just have to wait much longer or am I missing something stupid?

Paul,
It sounds to me like the paints were not compatable. If the colors were enamels and the clear was a laquer, then it will definitely "crinkle" the colors. If the paints were the same brand and a compatable type, you really should not even have to wait overnight.

All paint and primer was rustolium, some was the painters touch and some the pro enamal. All of it wrinkled up side by side. Paint wasn't even tacky to the touch!Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Yeah, I've seen this happen on train models. The clear coat seems to do it.I think it may come, in part, from applying the clear coat too thick in one coat. You can't easily see how it's covering and will tend to put it on too thick.
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people
happy?
Tell them it was intentional !
I've seen that happen when the clearcoat was applied too thick.

Too thick must have been it - you'd think there would be a big fat warning for that! Unfortunatly the wrinkling happened on the pieces I had just stenciled too, just doesn't look right.
Eh, maybe I'll leave it anyway.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

Likely the paints weren't compatible. Once I handpainted a dragon on a friend's motorcycle helmet. The enamel paint had been dry to the touch for two days. I thought I'd try some spray-on acrylic clear coat rather than brushing it on. Big mistake; the propellant annihilated three days of painstaking work in seconds.
Had to sandblast and start fom scratch ... A lesson learned. Now when I try a new product I'm unfamiliar with I paint a test area on some scrap. Saves a lot of time and effort.Joe Bartok
I've heard that from a number of sources, but that was not the case here. All coatings were made by rustolium, either their Painters Touch or Pro Enamal... Pro Enamal clear wrinkled both paints side by side.Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA

I think I would forego the clear if you redo it. I've ruined paint with clear overcoats before. My guess is that the undercoat had not fully cured, or the clear was put on too thick and lifted the undercoat. Also I don't know whether the paints were compatible, even though they are the same brand, might have different solvents.
I used some rattle can primer on a car once. Sprayed some automotive laquer (professional paint, from a gun) on it and the primer went and wrinkled and disolved into the laquer.
Hey California man---
It is called humidity! Just jerking a little hard cause I drove in LA during the Rain. (30 minute news broadcasts on the rain) a new phenomonon! I kind of expected you would not have had that experience of painting multiple coats in humid weather. It takes longer for the drying during humid weather. Plus if you lightly sanded the paint you "open up" the skin on the last coat. The length of time is indeterminate. If the humidity is way up you might have to wait 3 days before the vapors leave the paint and the surface catalyzes.
Thankfully it is just a bike. try doing it to a 15 x 20 hardwood floor. I did that last summer. The can said 4 to 6 hrs. I waited 24 while it rained outdoors. It looked like a riverbed after a drought. Sand er off and start over.
Welcome to my life next to Lake Michigan.
I know, I moved here from Chicago area. Weather is news here, because we normally don't have any!
I think it was the humidity... and normally it's so dry here!Rebuilding my home in Cypress, CA
