We’re remodeling our bathroom, but want to keep the old light fixtures
which are on either side of the medicine cabinet. A fluorescent tube
mounts vertically to each fixture. The fixtures themselves are chrome
( or maybe they’re chrome-plate on some other metal ). Anyway, the chrome
finish is rather pitted ( after 40+ years ).
What’s the best way to restore these fixtures to a bright chrome
finish ? What’s the easiest way ? Can this be done at home ? Or do
we need to farm it out to a metal replating service ?

You answered your own question: "Or do
we need to farm it out to a metal replating service ?"
Take the things over to them. They can answer all your questions and tell you what it will cost. Over the internet, without seeing the material and condition, who knows?
*Agree with Fred, get your stuff to the replating service. These fixtures are relatively common if I'm on the same track as you, they aren't that old but have a certain appeal to them don't they?, I have the same in my home. Are yours in working order? Where are you located? A number of firms in upstate NY that I know of can replace them for you or do the replating. Make sure you cut the power to the bathroom/light fixture before removing them from the wall, be safe and good luck.
*Hi Bill, Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, the fixtures do have a certainappeal. They go nicely with the pink-wall-tile-with-black-trim-tilein the bathroom. Yeah, they're in working order, although I just replaced theold ballast unit on the right side - it had burned out recentlywhen I was at work and my wife called me to say that the onelight had gone out and that there was a bad smell. I cut the power before I opened up the fixture. I'm anelectrical engineer by training and long experience, butthat doesn't give me a grant of immunity from occasionallygetting "zapped" or "bit" by the electricity. Again, thanks to you and Fred for your input. Ed
