Can’t Believe you are supporting adding new shingles over old. bad idea. Your shingles will curl, won’t last half as long, and voids the warranty instantly. Sure you can do it, good roofers wouldn’t.

Shingle warranty"s are not negated by reroofing. Any good roofer would know that. Shingles do not curl due to reroofing. Shingles curl due to drying out and sealant failure. Meaning after 20 yrs or so. There is a right way , wrong way and some other ways to do a fine reroofing job that could get even more years than the manufactor's warranty. My guess is you are referring to the upcoming article on reroofing which you haven't even read yet. When I see it, I am sure I will not agree with everything in the article but at least I will read it first.
*I read the article ; Stephen knows his stuff . Qualified good roofers can and do reroof over old . The one thing we did at the roofing co. I worked for that Stephen didn't do was put down a felt over the old roof. But if you read the artice you will be able to figure out why he did not use the felt. Read and learn.
*When my asphalt shingles were 'blown up' due to high winds in 1995, the roofers wanted to install over the old. I said no, and the insurance company (Allstate) said no. I had them strip down to bare wood and start over with new 30# felt. I never even had to pay my deductible. I got the Timberline Ultra with the algae protection (Houston necessity). My mother-in-laws house has 3 layers and looks like sh--. I told her all that weight would make her roof fall in. She's been nervous ever since. :)
*You should only add a second layer at the most, not three. I have not had a chance to see the article. Here is my way. First cut all overhangs back to trim. Install edging to all rakes and eaves to hide old roof. Install new flashings every where. You can not tell there is a second layer. A re roof should only be done before there is to much decay going on , right around 20 yr's old. Before the old roof starts to curl up or fall apart. Use nails that will go through the sheathing. They sell a Ice and water shield for re roofing , though I like the normal stuff better.
*I got my issue a week ago.Great article Steve. Believe it!Dave
*In utah building code,, you can re-roofing,, after the 3rd layer,, then have to remove the rest of it and put new tar paper,, ice water shield,, then put new shingles,,,, it wont curl,, unless if you tear off the ugly old shingles and put it new one in,, then layer it,,, it looks sweet (I'm not a roofer)
*FWIW, in NW Ohio, nail overs are common. Generally, a second layer will lose a few years life expectancy.Mike Taylor2: I can understand your impulse to scare your M-in-law, but 3 layers are pretty common in my area (were allowed until 3-4 years ago) and I see plenty of sagging roof rafters, but very few cracked rafters or other signs of structural problems. How long has she had those 3 layers? 3 layers do look pretty crummy, 2 layers might, depending on how they did it
*Three layers do look a bit "crummy" They also look down right evil when it's time to tear them off. My lower back is talking to me already!
*In NJ ,NY and PA three layers are not allowed. Max of two. Not to mention if the rafters start to sag, imagine how they will feel when you add another 10 ton of snow on top.
*I'm getting ready to tear off 4 layers. The last fool didn't even tear off the ridge shingles, just put a whole nother ridge on. All this is over the original 100 year old flashing.
