The local Habitat re-use store has a great selection of kitchen cabinets . Will I save many $$ by buying these cabinets rather than from the big box store? Any words of advise on what to watch for?

If they cost $100 each and you can get them at HD for $90 then, no, you will not save any money.
If they cost $25 and and you can get them at HD for $90 then yes, you will save money.
You got to give a bit more to go on here.
How complete are the ones available?
How torn up are they?
Do you like the current color?
Do they have the components you wish to have?

Depends if you like worn cabinets that are likely out of style and won't really fit your application. ie - most all kitchen cabinets are special order, the reason being that there are literally 100s of sizes and probably 1000s of size combinations and the chance that you will get something that will really fit your application is slim to none.
I used to volunteer a lot for Habitat. The local chapter is one of the most organized and largest "producers" in the USA. Even still it is a 3 ring circus complete with clowns even they refuse to use used materials- like the stuff at their re-use center. Back in the old days I remember when they did - the lady's sink ended up offset from the kitchen window by 6 or 9 inches. That should have been my first clue what kind operation it truly was. Good 'nuf for Habitat work...
Our local re-use center sells for what seems to me to be $.60 to $.80 of retail value - for new stuff. For that kind of hassle I'd expect to pay maybe 30 to 40%.
I'd say used cabinets would be good for a huntin' cabin where the main order of business is downin' brewskies.
No love lost...

Thanks Matt - - who was close to the music.
Friend of mine bought a set of oak cabinets from the re-sale store, paid $300 for them. I helped him install them in his kitchen and we had to get very creative installing them but when we were done the kitchen didn't look half bad but it did look 1000% better then when we started!
I'd have to say that if you can get the cabinets cheap enough, good enough quality to surpass what you currently have, and can make them fit then by all means go for it. If you cant do any of these things then it's probably not a good idea.
Everybody doesn't live in a $250,000 and up house, sometimes the cabinets that come from the habitat store are a big improvement over what they have.
I frequent the Habitat store in two towns and I get some hellish deals, the other day I picked up a pair of french doors, pretty good quality, no warping, came out of the local museum in a remodel and I paid $20 for the pair, not a bad deal if you ask me. I know I couldn't make them for that much!
