One of my clients is having the driveway replaced with separate concrete slabs 6″ thick in the middle, 12″ around the perimeter. Not a problem, the question I have is he wants to join each slab with rebar. The problem is the rebar will be in the soil between each, beneath a dripline supplying H20 to the grass growing in between each. My understanding of rebar and concrete is that the rebar must be completely inside of the concrete or as it rusts the concrete around it weakens and will break apart. How far off base am I on this?

He should get coated rebar.
Actually, he wants "pegs", similar to what they use at highway joints. They're maybe 1 or 1.5" in diameter, 18-14 inches long, and coated. Come already assembled in a strip with wire "chairs" supporting them.
Mahalo guys,
Your answers all confirm what I thought. I'm going to tell him about BT and have him take a look at this thread. A "runway" good description!! I'll check our two local LY's and see if they have the joiners, 'cuz I really hate Cheepo Depot and Higher Lowes.
You may have better luck finding them at White Cap. They have one on the B.I., Maui, and Oahu. From your name and location I assume your in the islands.
aloha Jason,
Yep, I am on the Big Island, been here 14 years now, but have never heard of or seen a business called White Cap. Just checked the phone book and nothing there, I'll 'google it'.
Mahalo for the info,

Aloha again Jason,
Just found that White Cap is over in Hilo and they bought Hawaii Wire and Cable, I think it was. Got the ph.# so will call them on Mon. If they have them, then I will think of a nice way to approach the GC for the job, and suggest he use them.
mahalo nui loa,

Just a shout out for White Cap, they are a good supply house. We use them a lot here in the S.F Bay Area. Mike

did you know Home Depot bought them up some time back???Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming<!----><!----><!---->

No, that is a surprise to me, and a disappointment I suppose.
Always felt better going there, avoiding the big box.

If you are looking in the phone book they used to be called Wire Products. They are down by the Hilo fuel docks
Thought about it some more, and given the thickness he's making things at the edge ("runway" is definitely right) it would make sense to have three or four "fingers" between adjacent slabs. These would be 7-8 inches wide and depressed below the surface 2-3 inches at the slab, dipping down to 5-6 inches below in the middle. Run the pins through the fingers and the pins will get both additional support and protection from soil contact and moisture.
You probably will need to work through the concrete supplier to get the pins -- they'd be more highway stuff than normal construction stuff.

I'm going to print these posts and give them to the GC for this job. I'm just acting as the go between for the Property Owners Assoc. and the different remodleing GC's on property.
I like this idea as it will not interfer with the turf and will protect the rebar and there is room/depth with the 12" "beam" around the perimeter of each block.
