I just purchased a flood damaged home in south mississippi. The house was built in
1987. After i completely guttted it out i found that only the coners of the hose were
sheathed in osb, the rest is some type of particle board. I’m not really sure what it is.
My problem is when then water came in it caused th stuff to rot and there is now
gaps and hole near the bottom between the studs. Is there a temporary way to fix
this without having to replace the siding because i really wont have the money to
replace all the exterior sidding for a year or so. I’m 22, a part-time student, and a full
time framer’s helper. Not the highest paying job in the world.

It's common to use that black fiberboard sheathing under most of the siding. If you plan to re-side ina year, just cut off the damaged part and leave the rest for now. Not the best solution, but it will work for a while. It does compromise your insulating value somewhat.

If the sheathing is providing the shear, then it must be replaced. Don't be penny wise and dollar foolish. Save money somewhere else. Buy off color paint mixes at the local store to save the money.Gut it, dry it out and rebuild right.
Yeah, but he said he has osb at all the corners. That should carry the shear/racking loads. I know that they sell that fiberboard stuff for shear panels, but I don't see how it has enough strength to hold itself in place.

Fast eddie,I agree, unless it isn't enough. Codes have been upgraded so he needs to build to current code. Here, it wouldn't be enough. I doubt it is there, but all I am saying is he should check and do it right and not cut corners. I don't think anyone would disagree with that.
I do plan on replacing the fiber-board with osb soon. maby sooner than a year. As soon as i move into the house i will begin saving to replace the sidding.
Either JLC or Fine Homebuilding had an article recently on what held up in the hurricanes. Fully sheered homes did well. Sheer plus fiberboard did not. This is not an issue in CA.
Here most everything Habitat builds has lots of sheer, even interior walls for stiffness. Not everyone does this. Did a blitz with Lennar. They sheered where it was called out and furred the rest with blue foam board over.
Jamed Hardie has a panel product which they claim is rated for sheer. Might be interesting if you can get your siding and your sheer in one operation. Plus, termites don't like it, etc. We use their plank siding and really like it. The ToolBear
