We’re installing a recessed light in our living room — directly out from the fireplace to lightup a painting hung over the mantel. The question is — how far out from the wall should the light be placed? Other recessed lights in our house are 23 inches out from the wall. We have a designer telling us the light for the painting should be placed further out. Electricians are telling us it should be placed closer to the painting. Who can advise?

I'm no expert--just my experience: The further you place the light from the wall, the higher your chances that it will reflect off the art work and cause glare, especially if it is oil or behind glass. Imagine the art work replaced by a mirror.
