I have heard that when several recessed lights are on the same circut, the bulbs in those cans need to be of the same wattage. If one can has a higher wattage bulb than the others, it will generate more heat and the life of the bulbs will be shortned. Is this a true statement or is it just another “Old Carpenter’s Tale”?

One fixture does not know what is in another one. This is complete nonsence.
However, if you put a bulb in a fixture that is higher wattage then it is designed for it will reduce the life of the bulb, not to mention the life of the fixture and the potential fire hazard.
