Recessed lights in hardboard/masonite?
I’ve been asked to install recessed lights in a kitchen ceiling of a 50 yea rplus old home. The ceiling material is 3/8 ” masonite or hardboard of some sort. It’s not drywall or plaster. I’m concerned about creating a fire hazard. Anyone have experience advice?

Have you thought about using IC cans?
I wouldn't have a problem installing in that ceiling-many cans are in a wood ceiling with no ill affects. The heat concentrates up in the can-if concerned-use ICT cans, they are made in remodels.
The 3/8's thickness might pose a slight problem with a remodel can-but I assume they would still mount tight. If not-pad out the above ceiling enough to make the remodel can "wings" tite.
