Just read the directions on my DW 18v cordless drill. They say that you should leave the batteries on the charger when not in use. The batteries will run out if taken off the base.
I don’t like the idea of leaving something plugged in forever, waste of electricity, even if it’s just a little bit.
I’ve heard of putting a timer on the chargers to turn them off after an hour or two. Any negatives to this concept?

The smarter chargers do not really use that much after reaching full charge. Most check charge state and react accordingly. I would guess that some of the less smart chargers might not do correctly if on a timer, like starting over each time.
I have about six or so charger into a power strip and turn it off when there are no batteries in. I plan to put and ammeter anc check draw under several conditions.
