Back in 1991 I built a home with a cut-and-stack roof. It was a pretty complex multi-hipped affair, and it was a big deal to me because I pre-cut the whole package, and stacked it out in a coupla days. We took a lot of pics the day we stacked, because I was gonna have a magazine article published, but it never made it to print. I ran a thread with the pics a couple of years ago, when I got them digitized.
Now, years later, I got to thinking about getting some “completed” photos (which I never took) to go with those framing pictures. But heck, I didn’t even know exactly where the place was. It was pretty much all empty dirt lots around back then, and we were just framing like machines, crankin’ em out, not thinking about a whole lot else. But I remembered the general area.
So I went to Zillow.com, and started looking at aerial views of the neighborhood. I kept finding real similar roofs, even a couple of flop-plans of the same roof in reverse. I went into CSI mode – going through all the framing photos, looking for clues in the background. It was on a cul-de-sac. There was a red tile roof next door, with two small gables on a big hip roof. There was a street behind it. I just kept at it. For hours. And guess what, I found it! I was stoked! I actually recognized it from the aerial view.
Here’s a picture of my roof cutting notes
So I went out there today to get some pics. Kinda hard to do, because of the siting of the house on the lot. The roof still looks good, no sags anywhere (some of the others on the street that I didn’t build have some bad sags in them, looking like a roller-coaster), and the miters in the fascia, that I could see from the front, are still tight.
And believe it or not, the neighbor came out to talk with me, and he remembered me! His house was one of the few finished houses in the neighborhood when we were framing, and he told me he took pictures of my toolbox drawers. He’s gonna call me to help with a shop he’s building in back. Super nice guy. Unusual experience all around.

Wow. That would be over my head, I'll tell you that.
Hey. What are all those blue objects in the back yards in the satellite photo? Kind of look like our blue tarps, but way too smooth.

Hey Huck, hope a little humor is okay, sometimes I sneak out of the tavern. I enjoy your threads, always interesting. I have been framing a roof out of steel this summer. Simple ridges, valleys and fascia. Not part of our usual game, it was a nice change.
Sounds like your curious research might land a little job, that would be nice. Mike

Any job, however little, would be nice right now. I cashed in all my piggy banks this week, netted $500. Last me about a week. Called Mom last night to tell her I'm coming tonight to visit - she said she's gonna hire me to build her a back porch for $3500 - along with her usual lecture about how she has to watch her money, etc. Gotta love Mom.View ImageView Image bakersfieldremodel.com
Looking at those roof pics, reminded me of the top framer in town at that time. His name was "Dusty", a stocky little guy, and he had the crew that we aspired to be. These guys could frame cut-up houses with 20' vaulted ceilings, arches, niches, plant shelves, multi-hipped roofs, etc. etc, you name it - in their sleep. Didn't even look like they were sweating. Two weeks, get in, get out. Clean framing, you know what I mean? Tight. Not a wasted movement, not a wasted piece of wood. Seemed like, anyways.
I ran into him the other day at the lube shop. Said he's into horse breeding now. Broke my heart. What's the world coming to when a guy like that has to go and get a paying job! Man that guy could frame.

While I still enjoy most aspects of my career, horse breeding does not sound too bad. Working a 4 man crew today while I put together PO's for the "snack shack" that we have to frame next week. Iron is up, foundation poured Wednesday.
See if I can attach a couple of drawings from Onscreen Takeoff.
PDF's hope they'll open for you.

Well, count me out on that one. I'm allergic to horses. That's a great photo of all the sticks leaning up against the walls. Honestly, never been on a crew that could do that - my hat's off to you.
That kind of looks like a circus clown...maybe asking who put that pool in the middle of the road.

You pre-cut the pieces for the roof?
Wow.
I would have needed to order some more lumber :)

pre-cutting everything is the easy part... having them all fit is the trick.

I think some of my little "jobs" would be easy to find on the satellite photos: Worthington Steel plant in Monroe, Ohio ( buildings "C" through "F") , KMI plant in Kalida, Ohio ( twice, "tilt-up" concrete wall con. , last one was about sept. 11, and did NOT see a plane for two days) , the new Middle School in Sidney, Ohio (on Fair Road) and a few other little buildings around that area." Although I have the right to remain stupid, I try not to abuse that right"
That's the concern if I did it :)
