I am in the prossess of muddin drywall in a new home. On the finish coats, using mud lite, topping, i get a red streak from the mud. It’s not rust from the tools, red chalk left from marking lines or some kid with a red magic marker or a red lumber crayon. It comes with the mud! I am able to paint over it, but its been bugging me for the last several houses. anybody else have red streaks?

I have had old buckets of mud have a black mold growing in them. I have never seen it, but have heard of a red mold.
But I would expect that to be on the surface of the mud and you would see it before using.

A-holes. Hey every group has to have one. And I have been elected to be the one. I should make that my tagline.
It is a fungal growth. Pretty common when mud is setting out in hot weather. Nothing to worry about unless you get alligatoring or poor adhesion after priming... then it means time for fresh mud. I wish the MFRs would put dates on their mud mixes. Mud that's too old is a nightmare... it powders off the walls and takes your paint with it.
So there is a fungus amongst use! The mud was in Seattle, the barge shipped to Alaska, then stored in the heated house, but fungus could grow anywhere. Thanks all for the comments
Yes. I got that a couple of months ago. Draw yer blade across it and there is a red streak. There wasnt much but it definetly came from the mud.
Hmmm. You aren't in Amityville, are you? ; -)

Maybe there is a little bit of dye in the mud? I don't know why they would dye it, but maybe you could check to see if it lists ingredients.
Just a thought.
