I am intending to refinish the exterior wall of a cottage[vertical t&g cedar ,1by6, V-joint. The existing finish appears to be a varathane/varnish or badly deteriorated Cetol or Sikkens [extreme flaking/peeling]. Would pressure washing be recommended here or must sanding be the only solution? The substrate beneath the siding is 1/2 inch aspenite {glue impregnated chipboard] covered by tarpaper. I intend to do the work in spring. Can any moisture forced beneath the siding be expected to dry during the summer months? The location is Kingston ,Ontario , Canada. Any advice would be appreciated.

Have (5 in exposure) clapboard clear cedar done and redone with Sikkens and at least one other (name forgotten) product. None has stood up as advertised on south or (especially) west exposure, but more important, DO NOT PRESSURE WASH IT. Soft grain will leave the scene, hard will stand right up, and old finish will stick around. Am about ready to cover stain west exposure after sanding off old products, as nothing else seems to work. Good luck.
