I am about to redo the wooden soffits on my 40 year old house. I believe that they have never been refinished and were the originally finished with spar varnish over the bare wood. The wood is in good condition, but the varnish is really flaking and peeling.
I would like to refinish the wood rather replace it with aluminum or vinyl. I live in Vancouver, BC so we get a lot of rain year round.
1) What is the best way to clean the surface for refinishing – sanding & scraping and/or chemically?
2) What is the best product to use that will last a long time and require the least amount of time to apply/maintain? I like the look of the finished wood, so I was thinking of using a transparent/translucent stain or maybe spar again?
Thanks,
Rich

Abrasive blast with corn cob residue or walnut hulls.
Exterior Poly like Hydrocoat Polyshield will work real well.
