On a recentproject we cleaned and refinished an 14 year old redwood deck. The deck was chloroxed and cleaned with a wood cleaner product. Boards with damage were replaced. Superdeck finish was applied. However, is remains very pporouso moisture and is fading. I am considering options to applying another coat of stain. A few years ago my 8 year old daughter spilled candle wax on a redwood table. That area remained water resistant for several years. Is there a blend of products that would out perform manufactures stains or water repellants? I recall but cannot find a article by an old-time “experienced” Seattle area painter that blended his own formula for the cedar decks of the area. It was along the line of tung oils and paparaffin. Any suggestions or obvious problems?

Dan, I had the same questions about 6 months ago when I started a deck and fence re-vitalizing project. I tried 3 different stain manufacturers. Superdeck, Valspar, and Flood.
I had the best luck with Flood. Like you said, the Superdeck for me was pourous and I had to stir and back brush a lot when applying. The Valspar seemed fairly easy to apply but the drying time seemed extra long. The Flood went on easily and seemed to seal the wood to outside moisture real well. The wood I was using was already very old and dry so I was not concerned about trapping moisture inside the wood. I am very happy with it so far. Here is the Flood web site.

*Thompson's deck sealer has wax in it. And they have a great marketing campaign too. That's all I'll say about that. Scott R.
