I recently bought a house as rental property. The grout on the tile of the wall surrounding the tub is cracked or missing in numerous places. Can fresh grout be put on top of what grout is already there or does the old grout need to come out before putting on new grout? Thanks.

with missing grout it would be a good idea to suspect the substrate as to being compromised...i.e. water damaged and in need of replacement...

Thanks for the reply....I think.
sorry for that dumb reply...lol.. but in case you don't know about the Fein Multimaster its a tool that can get that job done for you. It'll cut out all the old grout you want pretty easily plus countless other tasks.
Just Google it if you don't already know about it.

Yes, it can--but only if you really want to go back and grout again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again, and again . . .
Now, it's no secret, I'd rather watch Lifetime network than do anything with grout. Grout can be a horrible, awful, nasty business--and that's at its best. But, still, far better to do it right, once, than to keep comming back over and over again.
The good news is that, usually, what has to come out will be middling easy--you ought to be able to "feel" it come loose. Bad news is that you still wind up needing to make nice clean cuts so that you can regrout.
You start adding up your own hours, and the materials, and all of the sudden, some form of solid surface or enclosure unit starts looking inexpensive <g>.
Thaks for replying. I agree. Better to do it right the 1st time.
