I’m going to add insulation to the main attic portion of a Cape Cod. The existing fiberglass insulation is in decent shape and fully encased in kraft paper, which I find odd since its 50+ years old. It is only about R13 at 3½” in height so I want to add more in the 2×6 joist bays.
I was going to add the new R13 on top of the existing because the older material is denser & heavier than the new and I do not want to compress the newer material under the older, and yes I know to use no vapor barrier on the additional insulation.
Any opinions whether this is the correct procedure? I’d rather not toss out the older insulation to use R30 glass.
Thanks

if you are not using the attic for storage, I would blow about two feet of cellouis(paper) on top to blanket the joist. r26 is not that great for attic
BB,
blown-in not an option, since I will at a future date expand living space into the attic.
Thanks for your reply.
