remodel insulation detail
1957 single story ranch in CO. exisitng exterior wall detail from the inside out;
- interior plaster veneer dirctly on 3 1/2″ concrete block
- 3 1/2″ concrete block(same block as in #1)
- 1″ withe (air gap)
- 3 1/2″ exterior brick
I want to add
5. vertical wood battens 16″ OC onto existing exterior brick #4
6. rigid insulation between battens
7. cementious siding
questions: do the battens need to be pressure treated or otherwise? where (if) do I need a vapor barrier?
thanks, Dave

In CO, your VB should be on the interior surface, which means VB rated paint is about all you could do on that front.
For the exterior, any wood in contact with masonry should be PT, but here is a better way - glue the foam panels to the brick surface, then go over with the strapping on 16" centers. tapcon them on and use glue again. PL300 is the right glue for foam.
better yet, from an energy viewpoint, do all this on the interior and sacrifice the space.

OK, so I'm nosy.
I was thinking foam on the outside would help with a heatsink mass from the block and brick instead of on the interior walls..
What am I missing here? somehow the air gap between block and brick?
interior space is to precious. I don't understand what the "strapping" is or how the siding would be attached to it?
strapping is what you call battens - also known as furring.
You speak of letting it into the foam, I am suggesting laying it over the foam so the insulative barrier has a continuous plane and not breakling it with thermal bridges. You would attach siding same way.Rez - good point there.

interesting idea, I think I like it. certainly from an energy point of view it would be better. i don't know how crushable the rigid insulation would be under the battens, seems like it might be prone to denting underneath allowing the battens to rock back and forth a bit since they are cantilevered out an 1" or so?
thanks for your opinion
hawk... i'd do similar to piffen..
i'd glue 1" ( r7 ) foam panels to the exterior.. not much glue either..
then i'd shoot vertical furring strips onto the foam.. shoot so you hit the mortar joints.. a lot will miss.. so what ?
then i'd fasten my cementious siding to the furring
cementious siding ... what's that ? like fibercement clapboards ?Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
