I need to find a remote access door latch or lock. I am working on a small office remodel for my tax accountant they would like a small gate or door that the receptionist can push a button to let clients in and to keep rude people from just walking into the offices and interrupting . I am not sure where to look or what this type of lock would be called. I tried remote access door lock and only came up with garage door openers any suggestion thanks

Few people understand it. Nobody agrees what it is, how to learn about it, or who's responsible for it. It has never been more important

I did "electrical door locks" and came up with a bunch of stuff.
Eg: http://www.smarthome.com/_/Door_Locks_Access_Control/Access_System_Components/Door_and_Gate_Access/Doorstrike/_/7/2Z3/1Qn/2Ht/nav.aspx
Electric door release or. opener or strike Even a key in knob lockset that's. wired through the door to a remote release button at her desk.

Contact your favorite electrician and tell him you want a normally closed magnetic door latch. He will know where to get the hardware and you will need to prepare the strike side of the jamb for the extra gear. These things are used in medical offices everywhere. If your electrician can not help you contact a local architect they should be more than happy to pass along some info.
couple ways of doing it...
magnetic.... exactly like it sounds... and you're not going to open it with it on...
i bought a few on ebay for less than $20 ea usually around $10 new in the box
you can get what looks like a regular door knob... that's electric... never seen on go for less than $50 on ebay
electric strike... it just allows a locked latch/knob ect to pass the strike... ie: the strike opens up... ebay all the time for less than $20
never seen any of these at a lock supply house for less than $100..
all of them are pretty easy to install.... most you'll need a transformer usually 24v (hvac types usually work well) that and a door bell botton...
look on ebay for electric strike, access control... or electric lock... the more screwed up the description the buyer gives the cheaper it will be... cause less people looking will be able to find it...
p
thanks for all the responses. I have already solved the problem. I bought an electronic latch plate at ace hardware works off 12v it is meant to be used with an intercom system. I will wire a push button at the reception desk. the door will take a standard household door knob set total cost for parts 86.00

Good job, while you're at it, install a chime or buzzer with a pushbutton for clients to gain access. You can utilize that same transformer If you want the electric release to operate silently, add a full wave diode rectifier to the 12volt side of the transformer. Get it at Radio Shack (Very cheap) Been there, done that, hundreds of times.Steinmetz
