I need to remove a double 2×12 header that is on the exterior wall of the house-not the gable side-I want to put the header in to the ceiling- btw-it spans 8 feet-. I plan to use a 3 1/2 x approx 12 inch gluelam. I am not sure how to do this. The house has two floors (plus a basement) and this is on the first floor. My current plan is to support the second floor floor joists ( 2x 12’s)and then cut them back. Leaving the existing header in place for the moment. Because I need to take the siding down-I was going to cut out the the existing 2x 12 between the floors that the joists are attached to and replace it w/ the gluelam and then attach the joists to it.Then i was going to cut the header out leaving like a foot on the ends. At this point i was going to put jacks under the gluelam and take out the rest of the header. Then I will replace the double pin studs 2×4’s with longer ones. Other than using some strapping to connect the short old header pieces to the pin studs before I can use jacks to replace the old studs, I think this plan will work….Any comments thanks Ray
