Hi. I want to take out a 12′ section of an exterior wall in a 1930’s concrete block home. There is a three season room on the other side (1950’s) and cust wants to make the bedroom (where the wall is taken out) bigger. Problem is existing ceiling. The ceiling joists run parallel to the exterior wall. The roof rafters sit on the exterior wall. How to hold up ceiling and rafters with out to much damage to ceiling (plaster)? Any ideas? THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR ANY HELP!!

We had a similar situation once. The rafters were perpendicular to the joists and we removed the wall that supported the rafters.
We supported the rafters with a header up in the attic. We had the luxury of having all the plaster removed. This allowed us to shift the load path relatively easily.
If I were doing this job, i'd plan on plaster repair to the ceiling and the walls that will conceal the new header supports.

Thanks for the reply. I think we will also have to put a beam in the attic to hold up the rafters. Ceiling repair cover the ceiling and hide the new beam. Thanks again.
