We are planning a kitchen remodel. We plan on putting the old cabinets in the basement. What is the best way to remove the granite tops from the cabinets without causing damage to both. It looks like silicone was used. Thanks Dan

piano wire or guitar string
guitar string can be had at wally world so its probably the easiest to be had
work the wire through the joint first and then wrap it around a dowel on both sides
that;s a good tip, thanks for that, we just did one and used box cutters, it was succesfull but I;m thinking your way is better.

Mark,
The wire works. Could be a bit problematic working inside/outside the cabinets on a wall installation.
I have used a 1" putty knife with some success on most any top that's stuck down. Get it in, then tap with a hammer as you work your way along between the top and cab. A hammer knife sort of.
And, the universal favorite using their scraper blade-The Fein Multimaster.
The weight of granite works against you also. Shim wedges placed behind you as you go helps in the release. Not too much to crack the top, just to replace the gooped up bond you are getting rid of.

have just bought my first ever Fein equivalent..what a fantastic tool. There's been many a job over the years I could have used that on.
One of the only limitations of that tool is your imagination. Hopefully your brand has the "parts" to expand your thinking of ways to use it.

The other limitation is the amount of money you have for blades.
Well then lets not leave out common sense and some brains.
Wire, putty knife and wedges sounds like the way to go. Now I just have to call in some favors to help carry them down stairs.
Thanks!
Get an old wood hand saw and grind off the "set" of the teeth and you now have a 24-30 inch long putty knife you can slide under the counter. With what's left of the teeth you can cut through the silicon as you lift the counter top.
