I was planning on removing carpeting from the hall directly adjacent to the front door to expose the hardwood floor underneath. As often happens with house archeology, I discovered a layer of linoleum glued to the hardwood directly under the old carpeting. Any suggestions on removing the linoleum from the hardwood floor without hopelessly gouging the wood? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

if it's black asphalt type cement u may never get it clean very hard to sand w/o getting contamination, ruins poly can use sharp floor scraper to remove it, lot of work try putty knife, if loosens good, ice scraper carefully to avoid gouges have had good luck sanding the modern gray, white, tan glues once lino is up the black asphalt type has to be scraped clean before sander is used
Dont know if it works or not but I heard that you could use citric striper to remove the old black adhesive.
Maybe some one else will know.
If the area isn't all that big you could probably replace the wood cheap enough.
