I hope someone has a quick answer for this one. Yesterday I found out that when crew was installing the fake stone veneerer on the chimney they got some motor on the shingles. Green architectural shingles with a grey stain on a cabin that we have not even spent a night in yet. I was wondering if there is something that will remove the residue? I hate to yell at the crew that was doing the job, they have gone beyond the call of duty on the rest of the job. This is on a log cabin so I don’t want a cure that might stain the logs.

If you have a few unused shingles or cut offs lying around, you could test some things on them. Muriatic acid is the usual for taking martar off of brick, but it may damage shingles. You could try vinegar and see if that does anything to the mortar (I'd still test on a scrap), I don't think it could hurt the shingles or the logs. If that doesn't woork, work your way up from there--very dilute muriatic acid (always add acid to water--never add water to acid (may foam and splash you)). Others who have more experience may have better advice if you wait a minute--I doubt that you're the first one this has happened to. :-)
Try a stiff bristle brush with nothing; if that doesn't work, replace the shingles.
