I’m remodeling a ranch with a gable roof, and am moving some windows in the gable end wall. I’ve opened up the wall, and have found that the studs in the wall run continuously from the floor of my first floor to the rafters in the attic.
Is there anything special I need to do to take out the studs on the first floor aside from just getting out the sawsall and lopping them off at the top of the room?

Probably not. Just lop.
You might need some type of header, but it probably won't be much.

Hehehe, Mike, I was avoiding opening that thread.
Yes, transfer the jacks down to the foundation, any way that is easy.

So you guys don't think cutting balloon-framed studs will weaken the wall...as in bowing in/out?

gotta awful lot of extra wood in that wall
Mike, I was avoiding opening that thread. How come?Gave him some direction on squash blocks---didn't want to get to far and steer him wrong. which is why I knocked on your door.I know, I know--you claim not to know about framing---well the Fest was a blast and it was nice to meet you in person.the one thing I have always strived to do was learn something about fields I am not familiar with.Spending time with other professional is always time well spent.Putting togethter some addition plans (Master bed and bath with office in basement) Nothing in the scale of DP but I sure could use some advice when I am ready to rip into it. Next spring --Maybe--depends on how my winter is for work-----See ya again sometime--Mike" I reject your reality and substitute my own"

Triangulation keeps things right on most gable ends.
you should be okay, just make sure your don't have a ridge beam holding up your roof, supported any of those studs ..
