I've re-caulked a few tubs and I have yet to find one technique that works all of the time. Usually, I use a metal putty knife to scrape away most of the old caulk. Hold it at a very shallow angle to prevent scratching the tub. I've also used a razor scraper, but be very careful because it's easy to scratch the tub using one of these.
The next time, I'm going to try one of those brass ice scrapers. They work really well on windshields, maybe they'll work on tubs too.
Final cleanup is done with a scotchbrite (nylon scrubbing pad) and water. If water isn't strong enough, I'll switch to a stronger solvent like lacquer thinner.

thanks for all the info.
Ditto what Doncando said.
Except my favorite tool is one of those goofy plastic throw-away putty knives. I like the 1" - no scratch, tile or fiberglass.

Never underestimate the value of a sharp pencil or good light.
Plenty of white (5%) vingar will help. Use an old credit card as a scraper.
I found a tube of caulk remover in Lowes about 6-8 months ago. Green gooey stuff. Squeeze it on and let it sit for 30 minutes or so. It did seem to help.
