I am in the process of Renovating a house that is at least 65 years old. One of the tasks is to shore up a loose railing on a stairway. It is an old wooden railing and it only has one post at the bottom. At the top the ballusters make the turn and continue on down the hallway.
My question is just on the Post itself. I can spin seperate sections of the post, and I am curious to know if it is possible to “unscrew” the post from itself?
Just curios if anyone has any insight.
Thanks,
GH

Greetings hopper,
Seeing you are a first time poster Welcome to Breaktime
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someones attention that can help you with advice.
Cheers
Thanks Razzman, it's great to feel welcome.
I have decided to attempt a careful disection of the old post and see what I find, however, I am still a couple of days from getting to it, so if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
Cheers to Breaktime.

if you don't find any data here you might want to check out the 'Old House Journal' forum.
A few years back they published a large volume book which reprinted many of their old articles. Jammed pack. Informative diagrams.
Came in real handy once when I was involved with some fairly archaic sliding door mechanisms.
Perhaps a lending library might be able to locate a copy.
Greetings Stan.

You say that you can spin parts of the post, is it possible that there is a threaded rod all the way through, from top to bottom.
Can you get underneath(basement) and see anything?
Is there a cap on the newel that you could pry off and see if there is a nut to tighten.
I'm just guessing here but I'd say that if the newel is loose you should be able to somewhat dismantle it and re-tighten it up for the next 65 years.
Doug
Yeah, there is no basement, not even a crawl space.
I think that is my best bet, to get the cap off as clean as possible and see if it is a threaded rod that I can just tighten.
Thanks for the help gents.
I like this place.
