My son-in-law saw a “This Old House” TYPE show a few months ago where they used a spring replacement for the old weights and pullies in a double hung window. Anybody know of the product? or something similar? Have use same?

I've used several of these "vinyl spring balances." I usually use them when replacing the sash as well as the old window-weight system. This is also a good time to stuff the old weight pockets with insulation.
These balances can also be used to repair broken 50's, 60's and 70's vintage aluminum tracks.
Try a professional door and window supplier. They can help you get the right size. Around here (Boston area) there are two basic tpes of double-hung windows: "Boston layout" and "New York layout." I imagine there are other sizes in other parts of the country. It helps to know what layout you're dealing with to get the correct length balance.

So, what's the difference in the two layouts?
The New York has tomato in it? (that's a chowder joke for the rest of you).
I don't know that much about chowder. I was trying to come up with a cute Red Sox / Yankees quip, but came up empty!

Who makes the things? We're in Canada but have access to Maine most days.Manafacturer?
Maybe you can find a dealer who can get stuff from Brosco (Brockway-Smith). They are a major milwork wholesaler in New England and likely supply retailers in Maine.

Mike - That's exactly what he saw on the show. Now we only have to find a supplier to sell it to us. Thanks very much!!
???Pullman makes the balances. I ordered mine directly from pullman. All you need to do is weight your sashes to determine how strong of a spring to order.Mike K
