I have a cedar shake roof on my home. There are numerous shakes on the edges that are crumbling even with a heavy rain. My gutters become full of shake particles, sometimes pieces an inch in length. There are no distinct leaks in the roof yet. Also there appears to be a heavy buildup of a mossy substance on the side of the roof shaded by trees. Can these shakes be replaced without redoing the entire roof, and is there something that can be applied to clean the roof. I have heard of different sprays for fungus as well as protection for the shakes. Any help with these questions or points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

So far, it sounds like you are a candidate for replacement instead of repair.
If it isn't actively leaking yet, you might start something by messing with it. Hard to tell from here.
Most of my shake repairs were done by sliding cedar shingles up under the existing shakes but from what you describe, where to start and where to end????
Thanks for the feedback on my roofing problem. Most of the problem is on the edge of the roof just above the gutters. If I were to remove them carefully and slide new shakes up in their place how would they be nailed down? Also have you any ideals on what can be sprayed on the roof to remove the moss?
Thanks in advance,
Tony
If you can remove the existing shakes and find a place to stop, the way I replace shakes is to set the shake 3/4" to 1" lower than where it will ultimately rest. Drive the nails at an upward angle right below the shake on top. Then use a block of wood to tap the replacement shake upward into place.
Good luck.

Is there another word for synonym?
There are various zinc, copper, and sulphur products on the market for mosses, some of whjich should be used with care. Check at your local hardware or garden center or look up Gardens alive online.Excellence is its own reward!
Piff,
You hit it...Thing is..theres a product thats been around for ages that I've used being under tons of trees in my last home.....Its a Zinc Strip you nail to the peak.....works like a charm...Call your roofing supply house. During rains it lets go of minimal amts of Zinc,,,,just enough to keep the moss off....I used it during a 12 year period after the first two of serious moss......cleared it up in a snap and kept it off.....The cedar roof I'mn gonna do on my new old 322 year old house you can bet yer booty those strips are goin' up where the trees are!!

That strip is for prevention, if I remember right - and it does work - but this case wants a wash to remove it.Excellence is its own reward!
