Hey guys, I’m currently working on a basement reno, and several of the interior brick walls are crumbling and turning to dust.
I want to clean the brick up and paint it (it’s already been painted many years ago), but I can’t wire brush it because it just turns to dust in some areas.
They did have leaking in the basement, but they had the outside waterproofed about 5 years ago, and haven’t had any trouble since.
I believe the bricks are non-facing bricks (white in colour, with no holes in the center). The wall is three bricks thick, and is probably close to 90 years old.
So I’m wondering if anyone has any recommendations on how to clean the brick up, and seal it (by painting or other means).
Thanks a lot,
-Kai Thompson

No one has any ideas? I'm thinking I may just strap the wall and drywall it, as there doesn't seem to be any easy solution.
With the old houses most used at least two types of brick, a exterior brick that was faced, and a interior brick that was highly porous. Once the interior bricks had water entering they started to deteriorate. I think that if you try to clean them you will cause more damage. Go with your solution and leave them alone. FYI my knowledge of this prob. is limited. Lots of luck.............................................

Rats - I was hoping for some good answers, too, as I have the problem here & there in my basement - a few of the bricks are just powdering away.
My plan, when I get around to it, is to remove the bricks in question & replace them with new ones...
I had a small area of crumbling brick on and interior wall on a remodel not to long ago. I used Abrotol (sp?) liquid wood to gently paint the soft brick. It solidified the brick and I was able to paint it. I have no idea how long it would last (and told the HO so).
