I have to repair my front steps, which are stone. I have replaced some of the stone with good quality Pennsylvania bluestone, and have set the new stone in mortar in preparation to pointing.
There is one original stone that was loose, so I removed it. The mortar underneath it is in very good condition. I’d like to reset it, but would rather not chisel out the mortar underneath. The stone is level and just about 1/8″ below the one next to it. Is there an exterior thinset adhesive that I can use to set it? I was advised to use retaining wall repair stuff (which comes in a tube like caulk), but it doesn’t seem to hold against the rough surface of the stone. If there is a particular adhesive that will hold the stone well, I’d like to use it… if not I can chisel out the mortar and do it the hard way…
Thanks in advance,
Glaucon

This isn't my area of expertise, but I have used a glue designed for cement blocks to build a small retaining wall for a planter for my wife. The glue came in the large caulking tube and worked very well. It is a type of eurathane glue and those cement blocks don't move.
PL Premium is what ya want. It will stick better than the mortar.

PL is a polyurethane caulk available at Lowes for sure, don't know about HD. Excellent adhesive.
Thanks- I'll give it a shot,
