Replace wide soffits with what?

cjj | Posted in Construction Techniques on May 14, 2004 09:32am

Is MDO my only option to replace the wide soffits on my barn? I need about 13″ and I don’t really like the exposed underside of the MDO layers. Also would like to use lengths longer than 8 foot, which I believe is all I can get MDO in.

The soffits and eaves have been pounded by the squirrels and the whole thing is pretty wavey. I trying not to make a big project out of this but….

Thanks.

steel roofing comes 26" wide and any length (within reason) rip it to 13" and screw it..

    MDO undersides? it's Paintable paper..

    Always vinyl or alum...

hardiboard but yer back to the 8' constraints..

go with steel roofing and the squirells will hate ya.

I guess I'm confused. Do you mean the corrugated roofing that replaces the shingles, or is this another product? I love wood too much to consider vinyl on the barn. I replaced the soffits on my house last year with MDO and it was a good product, but I thought I'd ask to see if I was missing anthing.

One board? Are you talking do a glue-up to bring me to the width I need? I'm a better furniture builder then a carpenter, so maybe a glue up and then run the stock through the wide belt. I built 40 louvered shutters out of cedar this winter and the Gorilla glue really impressed me so I guess the joint should hold up.

sure , corrugated or 5 v...or bend up alum. coil stock.  Vented alum. is readily available..for the rakes, just use solid.

when you ssaid about the exposed MDO ya mighta added confusion in the mix..

edit to add...MDO is available in more than 8'..look at the hiway signs..that's MDO..

        CJ,

If you like the wood look, you might want to consider T&G pine or cedar. I used some on a house awhile back and it looks great and allows for some movement. It was random lengths so the seams weren't as overwheming as plywood and It had beveled edges.

Is it vented? Another option is to use two cedar 1x6's and a continuous soffit vent to get your width.

Yeah, I would like to stay with the wood look. I have to do the fascia and the soffit and it is not vented, but I see no reason not to vent it while I'm there.

        right on..

I still would vent the eaves tho'

a 2'' vent strip would drop his OA width to 11..and hardie for the unvented rakes at 12' lenghths would be much better as far as butt joints go..

Sounds good. But why not use vented hardisoffit? it runs whole 12" length and is perforated for about 5".

          eitherway is good.

we dont have that here, I was looking for something for my eaves too.

          2. cjj | May 15, 2004 05:12pm | #10

I never heard of Hardisoffit. I will do a search. I'm in Maine so I hope I can get it. It sounds like squirrels would hurt their teeth on it. The neighbors don't like it when I pull out the Stevens 311.

I didn't consider plywood only because I prefer solid material, although that is only opinion. The plywood that I tore off the house last year was date stamped 1967 so that show that it can last.

Yeah it's great stuff. They both come in 12' lengths and are 16 " wide.We don't have much call for 2' overhangs here because of the 130 mile an hour wind zone.

What's wrong with plain old exterior plywood?

  4. DanH | May 16, 2004 05:46am | #12

You know, it occurred to me that I've seen a few old houses with soffits done in lap siding. You could use Hardieplank and accomodate any sized slot for ventillation.
