I have an old double bit axe that I’ve had for many years, and am very fond of. Last weekend one of my Sons picked it up, and tried to split some wood with it. Within 5 minutes he had broken the handle off. Now I can’t find a replacement for it.
Seems like every hardware store I call has double bit axe handles, but they’re for the 3 to 4# size. My axe head is 7 pounds. (Tim Taylor size)
Anybody have a source for something like that? I really like this axe, and hate to give it up for a cheap $15 axe like they sell nowadays.

Since you are in central IL, go down to the river bottom and split yourself a nice handle out of shagbark. A few years back checked a shagbark log and bunch of saplings for hammer handles onto the airplane as luggage coming home, probably wouldn't be able to do that now.
I ain't got that much time or ambition. You can spend hours working on cutting a handle like that. Then one slip and you've got a long hunk of firewood.I'm on the road constantly, where the hell is Easy Street?
bring it up here - I've got hickory, froe, drawknfe and shaving horse- - won't take as long as you think - I've got one to do myself - forgot I had the head till I stumbled across it a couple days ago - DOUD
I also have a froe, shaving horse, and a couple of drawknives. But no intention of using them that seriously.............Bumpersticker: Do you think you'd drive any better with that phone stuck up your a$$?
Have you tried the Farm Stores?
Around here we have TSC and Orscheln (sp?). when I busted the handle on my sledgehammer, I got one of hse yellow jobs with the fiberglass core.
Since it uses Epoxy to fill the hole in the head, I'll be they've got one that can be made to work.

BTW -- The thing has done its job, too. It has absorbed several wicked strikes on the handle instead of the head without breaking.

Yup - Tried one of them at noon today. No luck. Can I pay off my Visa with my Mastercard?
Go to an Ace or Truevalue hardware store. Find a clerk over 30 and ask for them to check there special order book. They probably have 10 different ones in there.
Ron,
I had the same problem with my old 13# post maul. Finally got a fiberglass handle the was too big and cut, sanded it to fit. Works better than wood,

The problem I'm having is that I can't find a handle big enough. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.Alcohol and calculus don't mix. Never drink and derive.
boss,
this page has links to a few specialty suppliers for lumberjack contests, etc. if anyone would know where to get one, one of these suppliers will.
