Hope this isn’t too stupid a ques…
Planning on replacing an exterior door on a probably 80+ y/o frame home that was vinyl sided s few years ago (I know, I know…)
Anyway, the siding (J-channel??) comes up right to the existing door frame/jamb, and the new, pre-hung door & frame with brickmold is a bit wider than the current siding/j-channel allows. I’d like to leave the new brickmold (prior experience, diff house I removed it, only to never get the new door to fit just right!) soooooo,
ques is, is it possible to hold up the new door against the siding, mark it (the outline of the new door), and cut the vinyl siding and install new j-channel making the replacement door look like it’s supposed to be there/fit? Any other methods? I don’t do this everyday like you, so I’m open for suggestions/criticism.
Thanks.

Take the brick moulding off and rip it down on a table saw. Be sure to take the same amount off each piece, so the trim is the same width around the door.
Then paint your cut edges.
Before you reinstall the door, put in a drip cap under the head piece of J-channel.

Take the old door out. Place the new door in the opening with the brickmould over the siding. Mark the edge of the brickmould. Remove the door, cut the siding an 1/4 shorter than you marked. Install door , install dripcap, j-channel and finish nailing up the siding.
