I have a double-hung window installed in a house built in 1952. On each side of each of the window panes, there is a tube with a spring inside and a spiral rod that twists the spring and supplies the force to keep the window from falling (like the old window weights). Does anyone make a replacement of some sort that will pull up on the window? I’d like to avoid installing the squeeze plastic inserts that hold up the window for now. (Later, it might make sense to replace the whole window assembly, so I’m looking for a quick fix.)
Thanks!

As of a couple of 4-5 ago, similar units were being sold for retrofitting old counterweighted windows. Haven't seen them recently, though.
Yes, I remember a unit that replaced the pulley and had a spring to hold up the window. Unfortunately, I don't have a pulley - or the space where it would have gone - to replace. (I don't know what is back there where the pulley or window weights would have gone.)
No, this retrofit unit required you to route a groove in the side of the sash to clear the spring. It was virtually identical to the spring balance you describe.
Many thanks for your help. Now I know what they are called! It's kinda hard to use Google when I don't know what they are called. :o)
I found a local supplier of "spiral window balancers" which can order replacements for me.
Thanks again.
