We are in the process of renovating our 120 year old house. There seems to be some disagreement between the contractor and the architect and I wonder if some folks here can help.
We installed new Windows (Jeld-Wen Series D). These are brand new, pre-hung, double sash windows. The contractor reframed all of the openings and installed the new window units.
The question is on the inner sill (I think technically called the stool?) These windows have a samll 3/4″ square piece of wood that runs the length of the window on the bottom. When the window is closed, the lower sash sits behind this piece of wood.
When the builder trimmed the interior, he ran the inner sill / stool to this piece of wood, and this piece of wood is slightly higher then the sell. So the inner sill stops, and bumps up about 1/4″ where it meets this other piece of wood which the lower sash closes down behind.
The architect has said that the inner sill should at least be at the same height as this piece of wood, or evem better, it should have been removed and the new sill should go right to the sash.
I did look at a few windows in a builder supply store and the displays were trimmed similar to how I described.
Hope this is clear. Any comments will be appreciated.

How about a pic? Andersen's 400 Series has a strip, that's part of the window, that sits above the window sill after installation. I don't know that I would remove the part from the window. Did you ask Jeld-Wen?

The sill should go to the window. Whether or not the 3/4" piece should be removed is hard to say. After the sill is installed, generally the sash reveal should be equal, so if installing the sill over top of the 3/4" strip makes the bottom reveal smaller than the other 3 sides, I would think that something was wrong. It could also be that the sill needs to have a rabbit routed on the bottom edge to cover the 3/4" piece. I'm not familiar with with that window and I can't find a window listed as "series D" on their website. If you know an official name for the window the website has good documentation on it that might help.
