I need to replace 19 window sashes in my 35 year old house and do away with the storms, all of which are in disrepair. I have talked to several local dealers about replacement windows, and get different advice/info from each. The climate here is not overly hot or cold. I need some objective advice.
It seems that solid wood is preferable over solid vinyl, since wood can be painted, and solid wood sashes seem to have a better durability record over time. Does vinyl clad on the outside made sense, since you usually don’t repaint the outside often? Second question; what is the difference between Low-E and Low-E coated? Is one more durable? Also, do I need Low-E in my climate (I understand it does cut down somewhat on the brightness coming through the window)? Finally, I understand that Argon windows are a waste in this area, since we don’t get very cold wnters. Correct?
Thanks. Rich.

I think Carolina Builders is a good dealer you should talk to. They are in your neck of the woods.
I wolud also get a clad or something that does not have to be maintained on the outside. As for low-E, the sun can fade your furnishings and such and can also help with energy costs( the sun shining in can heat up your house alot, it will save on air conditioning). And for Argon, any extra insulative properties you can install will save in energy bills (air conditioning and heating) no matter where you live.
*Thanks, Allyson. We do have a Carolina Builders in durham. One follow up question. What is the difference between Low-E and Low-E coated? Is one better than the other?Rich
*Low-E is a coating , so I don't think there is a difference. (Maybe someone else here knows different?).Billy
