Replacing a window that has nailing fins

I need to replace 2 windows that have nailing fins ( flanges around the outside perimeter that have slots for nails for installing, similar to vinyl siding ). The windows that need replacing have no brickmoulding or other trim around them. Instead, the vinyl siding on the house butts right up to them. The windows are metal-clad on the exterior, so the nailing fins are obviuosly metal as well. Each window is in a small dormer.
My question is, how do I get the existing windows out with the least amount of work and still get a watertight seal when putting the new ones in ? I had thought to cut through the nailing fins with a reciprocating saw but the J-channel of the vinyl siding is to tight up against the side of the window-frame in places to fit the blade in without ending up damaging the J-channel.
I am beginning to think I may have to remove the siding on the front of the dormer – but I am really hoping someone has ab right idea tha is less involved….

Less involved, or water tight?
With a pry bar, you should be able to pop the "J" channel....then pull the nails out of the flanges. The siding may not have to come completely off....but if they are small dormers, its likely easy enough...or even easier....just to remove all the way to the corners. It'll make window installation and proper flashing a breeze.
I would also try and incorporate trim around the exterior provided there is adequate room.

Thanks for the feedback ! I was wondering about popping the J-channel but my problem is that the metal cladding on the existing windows protrudes out far enough so as to be flush with the face of the J-channel. I guess I don't need to care about damaging the existing window frames though, since they're coming out anyway ?!
Guess I'l be trying to lift out the J-channel first and if that doesn't go to smoothly it'll be off with the siding, put in the new windows and put the siding back up. Also, your idea of putting some additional trim around the window once it's in is an idea I like.
Thanks again for your reponse. I'll let you know how it worked out.

Just pull the siding. Its gonna be the quickest way to get a good final product.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for your reply... you're probably right about just removing the siding, but I'm thinking to try J.D.Reynolds first suggestion on popping out the J-channel . It probably won't work that way, given that then metal cladding on the windows is flush with the face of the J-channel ( see my reply to J.D. )

You've been given good advice from the first two posters. Lot easier in the long run. Your new windows can be built out as far as you want to. Nice to match the same as the brick mold on the other windows though. Cap them when you are happy.
good luck
