Question: Similar to probably many americans I have a garage and an attic both with roof truss systems that zig-zag and allow no free space…and, I have a need for more room. There must be some weekend-carpenter way to carve a
space out of the roof truss system by adding additional supports, beams, sistering, gusseting, (SOMETHING!!!) that will support the roof without having to get into removing the entire roof and put on a whole new one on top of a rafter system. There has to be a solution to this problem! Could I laminate (“sister”) larger wood beams (say 2×10’s) onto each diagonal truss piece that runs under the roof? Could I cut plywood triangles for the top space and glue and screw these into place? What can I do?
Thanks,

Sorry Carey, there is no week-end carpenter solution to what you propose. You need to consult with an architect or engineer to come up with a plan. That's what a professional would do, and even if you're going to do it yourself, thats what you need to do.
John
*It still requires proper engineering, but I have built a new roof support structure by removing the fascia and sliding the new rafters and joists up into the attic space thru those openings and sistering them to the truss system. After the new rafter/joist system is installed the webs of the trusses were cut out and the attic room was studded out, insulated etc. It was a real pain. The only advantage was the house was never open to the weather.
*What you want do may be possible, but I suspect it would be so expensive that it may actually be cheaper to tear off the roof and replace the trusses. Also - adding beams probably means putting up with a post or 2 in your garage. Who wants that ?Both John and Ron Schroeder are right on with their advice.
