Do you mean like a masonry firebox or what? I'm having a little trouble picturing rotted firebricks... Maybe it's a metal firebox? At any rate, please describe the construction of the fireplace, fireplace facade, and chimney.
Don't know about the firbox, but I replaced my rotted damper with one on the chimney top, with a chain to the bottom. No problem with it.
