Got a call today. A guy needs an insurance estimate on replacing a couple of TJI’s that somebody notched when doing some other work. Don’t know the details yet. I’m supposed to see him tomorrow.
So my question is, how can I attach the top flange to the flooring without damaging the finish floor above. If it was just dimensional lumber, I’d toenail or screw it from below. Is this kosher with I-joists. Any other ideas?

Use A-35 clips every 16 inches or so, with an appropriate length (3/4?) screw. Recently used this approach to retro-fit a steel moment frame into an existing floor that had oak above. Don't see why you couldn't use it to fasten a couple of joist to the sub. Screw the clips into the top flange before installing. You might stagger the clips, every 8", on either side. This would help prevent the flanges from opening up if you screwed two clips into the flange directly opposite from each other
*Ryan I think you'd be OK going vertical through the flange. I know I try to avoid going horizontal as it tend to split the cords apart.good luck! maybe contact a lumber salesman they always seem to know alot;)jim
*Ryan,What about sistering the notched TJI's instead of replacing them? This maintains the connection already existing to the subfloor. Just glue the top to the subfloor and connect old to new with nails through the padding at intervals. The new one takes the loads and the old one stabilizes the new one. If the old TJI's are glued, this will save the subfloor, too. Just my $.02.Bill
*Hey Ryan, when I have done this in the past I contacted the manufacturer rep- macmillin -lp- whoever and been given a solution. usually a length of microlam screwed and glued to the web. They will give you a drawing and as long as you install per their recommendation you will limit any liability to yourself.
*Talked to an architect at my lumberyard. He photocopied some specs from the TJI architect's book. I'm doing the following: I will sister one joist next to the old one, block the void solid with dimentional lumber, and bolt the two together.
